With a growing number of older adults living independently, it is increasingly important to make sure that they are safe at home. Falls and burns are among the most common accidents involving older people. Older adults who live alone may also become the victims of criminals who target older people. If you are an older adult living on your own, or care for an older person living alone, here’s what you need to do to stay safe.
4. Financial Safety
a. Never leave your purse unattended.
b. Avoid having large amounts of cash or valuables at home.
c. Tear up or shred all personal and financial information; never just throw it into the trash.
d. Never give your particulars about your bank accounts to anyone.
5. Car Safety
a. Make sure all doors are locked and windows are rolled up while driving.
b. Never leave anything valuable in plain view. Never leave car keys inside the vehicle.
c. Always lock the doors when you leave the vehicle, even for only a short time.
d. Park as close as possible to where you are going.
e. When returning to your car, look around as you approach the vehicle. Have your key ready in your hand before approaching the car. Check your car before getting in. Once you’re inside the car, lock all doors immediately.
a. Have an emergency communications plan. Create a friends & family group. Have the numbers of people you need to contact in an emergency.
b. Make travel arrangements in case of evacuation. Plan with family members about what you would do in the event of an evacuation.
c. Consider getting a medical ID bracelet. Order a medical ID bracelet for people with chronic health problems with information medical conditions, allergies, medications, and emergency contacts.
d. Stock an Emergency Medical Kit. An emergency medical kit should include 3-6 day supply of your medications along with an up-to-date medication list that includes the names (brand and generic) of any drugs you are taking and the doses.
