With a growing number of older adults living independently, it is increasingly important to make sure that they are safe at home. Falls and burns are among the most common accidents involving older people. Older adults who live alone may also become the victims of criminals who target older people. If you are an older adult living on your own, or care for an older person living alone, here’s what you need to do to stay safe.
Home Safety Rules
1. Remove fall hazards
Install secure handrails on all staircases. Ensure proper lighting. Install nightlights in areas seniors’ frequent at night.
Install grab bars for the toilet, bathtub/shower,
Put rubber mats in the bathroom to prevent slipping
Create an open environment. Declutter the house from old newspapers, shoes etc. Discard or donate old furniture. Remove throw rugs.
Wear anti-slip slippers or socks when walking around the house.
Keep walking aids within reach. Move slowly from one room to the other. There is often no hurry.
2. Protection against fire
Do not overload power sockets & extension cords – unplug appliances when not in use.
Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher at home at all times.
Remain in the kitchen while cooking – never leave your cooking stove unattended.
Avoid wearing loose clothing when cooking—fabric can catch fire very quickly.
Don’t leave any candles or fireplace burning in an empty room. If a fire does break out in your home, exit immediately and call 101.
Check the electric cords of all appliances and lamps in your seniors’ home. Replace any damaged cords.
